Abridged Video Transcript: Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. And matter is made up out of atoms and molecules, everything, every solid, liquid, and gas is made of atoms. Join two or more atoms together. And you have a molecule. A molecule is the smallest particle that has any properties of a compound. Chemists tend to discuss molecules instead of atoms. In the same way writers focus on words and not letters. Speaking of chemists, do you know their favorite kind of dog? A Laboratory Retriever, of course. I crack myself up. Back to discussing what makes up the universe. In the same way that the English alphabet is made up of 26 letters and those letters can be combined to make up more than two hundred thousand words. There are 92 different naturally occurring elements that make up all things. These elements cannot be divided into two or more simpler substances by physical or chemical reactions. And these 92 different elements can be combined to make millions of compounds. Still need a clearer picture? Just look around. If you can see, it is made up of elements or elemental compounds. Elements are the same throughout the universe. Meteors contain the same element, iron, that is found in the soil here on Earth. Your body contains about 40 different elements. But it’s mostly made of hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, calcium, carbon, and nitrogen. There are one hundred and eighteen elements on the periodic table, and a theoretical 119th and 120th that have yet to be synthesized. But of those that are naturally occurring there are only, only 94 or 98 elements, depending on which scientist you ask. Those scientists can’t agree on anything. Only 89 of the elements are in abundance in nature. Dmitri Mendeleev is often cited as the creator of the periodic table, but like most history, there is a murkier reality. In truth, his was just the first table to gain scientific credibility. And here’s a fun fact I bet you didn’t know. The rows of the periodic table are called…’periods!’ My buddy Albert Einstein taught me all the elements of the periodic table when I was 4 years old. Here he is to recite them all for you. E=mc² hydrogen, helium, lithium, … Thanks for watching and reading. Please subscribe to all of the Emerson Loves channels linked above.
